Cruise Travel Industry News - JUNE 27, 2024Whenever I receive inquiries for cruises and I quote the full price, potential clients balk and say they can get it cheaper online. I ask them to go all the way through the cruise line's consumer website to the point before they put in a credit card so they'll see the real price. They reply back in shock!It's true. Consumers looking for good cruise deals, see a great price on cruises but then are shocked by the hidden fees (better known as taxes, fees and port charges). These fees can significantly increase the consumer's budget and will often double the price of a 'cheap' cruise depending on the ports visited.Well, this past week I've been getting a whole bunch of emails from cruise lines that state: starting on July 1, they will display prices that include the cruise fare AND all taxes, fees, and port charges.Why?Because changes in California’s consumer protection law - called the Honest Pricing Law (SB478) - going into effect July 1, 2024 has created a gigantic wave across the whole cruise industry. Insights for 2024 were released by Travel Market Report by Daniel McCarthy today. And cruise did and continues to dominate the sector!🛳 About 30% of advisors plan to sell cruise vacations in 2024🌊 Ocean cruises remain the most popular, constituting 70% of total cruise sales in 2023💰 Cruise dominated with 28% of travel advisors annual gross sales and will increase to 29% in 2024. Second was All-Inclusive vacations at 17% in 2023The report says "While cruising remains popular, more advisors expect to sell river and expedition cruises in 2024. This also shows the evolution of the cruising industry with more clients willing to spend for a more luxury and niche experience"Looking at new advisors joining the industry the report says that "Many advisors shared that customer service, training programs, and technology and booking platforms were the top factors when selecting which host agency or consortium to affliate with"Its quite surprising how many host agencies and programs don't have a booking platform in place for cruise. Great news announced this morning: Latest data shows UK and Ireland cruise industry continues to engage, entice and innovate.CLIA has revealed that holidaymakers from the UK and Ireland took 2.2 million cruise holidays last year, surpassing the highest previous annual number.In data published today (April 17, 2024), CLIA revealed that:- The 2.2 million total is up from 1.7 million in 2022.- The Mediterranean remains the number one destination for cruise travellers from the UK and Ireland. Of the top three destinations in 2023, 35% of passengers travelled to the Mediterranean, 29% to Northern Europe and 12% to the Caribbean.- Exploration destinations have seen a 53% increase in passenger numbers year-on-year.- The average age of UK and Ireland cruisers is decreasing: at 55.1 years old in 2023 it is down from 56.1 in 2022.- The average cruise length increased to 10.1 days, up from 9.8 the previous year.- 65% of passengers enjoyed a pre-cruise stay in their departure destination, while 52% stayed on after their sailing.In terms of sentiment, perception and intent, a corresponding survey of 500 international holidaymakers revealed:- 82% of cruise passengers say they intend to take a holiday at sea again (a 3% increase from 2019).- 71% of those who have never cruised before would consider doing so.Meanwhile, over 300 ships are set to sail this year, the first time the global CLIA member fleet has surpassed this number. Overall capacity will increase by 3.6% as a result.Andy Harmer, Managing Director, CLIA UK & Ireland, said:“Cruise continues to lead the way in travel and we can clearly see that from these encouraging latest figures. A holiday at sea offers something to suit all tastes and budgets, both on and off the ship, which makes for an ideal combination.
